Mode of Action
Agathosma betulina (Buchu) Diuretic. Decreases inflammation of the colon, gums, mucous membranes, prostate, sinuses, and vagina. Aids in controlling bladder and kidney problems, diabetes, digestive disorders, fluid retention, and prostate disorders. A specific for bladder infections. Arctostaphyllos uva-ursi (Bearberry) The glycoside arbutin is the active ingredient in uva ursi. Arbutin is present in fairly high amounts (up to 10%) in uva ursi. It has been shown to kill bacteria in the urine. Before it can act, however, the sugar portion of arbutin and its attached small molecule (known as hydroquinone) must be broken apart. The urine must be alkaline for this to happen. Hydroquinone is a very powerful antimicrobial agent and is responsible for uva ursi's ability to treat urinary tract infections. Arbutin has also been shown to increase the anti-inflammatory effect of synthetic cortisone. Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) A number of chemicals may contribute to yarrow's healing properties. The volatile oil, which is rich in sesquiterpene lactones, gives yarrow its anti-inflammatory activity. Alkamides (which are also found in echinacea) may further reduce inflammation. Melissa officinalis (Lemon balm) The terpenes, part of the pleasant smelling essential oil from lemon balm, produce this herb's relaxing and gas-relieving effects. Flavonoids, polyphenolics, and other compounds appear to be responsible for lemon balm's anti-herpes and thyroid-regulating actions. Avena sativa (Green oats) The fruits (seeds) contain alkaloids, such as gramine and avenine, as well as saponins, such as avenacosides A and B. The seeds are also rich in iron, manganese, and zinc. The straw is high in silica. Oat alkaloids are believed to account for oats' relaxing effect Hypericum perforatum (St.John's Wort) St. John's wort has a complex and diverse chemical makeup. Hypericin and pseudohypericin are believed to have antidepressive and antiviral properties. Other constituents, such as xanthones and flavonoids, may also contribute to the medicinal actions of St. John's wort. Echinacea angustifolia (Coneflower) Echinacea increases bodily resistance to infection and is used for boils, erysipelas, septicaemia, cancer, syphilis and other impurities of the blood, its action being antiseptic. Vaccinium myrtillus (Billberry) Anthocyanosides, the bioflavonoid complex in bilberries, are potent antioxidants. They support normal formation of connective tissue and strengthen capillaries in the body. Anthocyanosides may also improve capillary and venous blood flow.
