Mode of action
Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Horsetail is very rich in silicic acid and silicates, which provide approximately 2-3% elemental silicon. Potassium, aluminum, and manganese along with fifteen different types of bioflavonoids are also found in the herb. The presence of these bioflavonoids are believed to cause the diuretic action, while the silicon content is said to exert a connective tissue strengthening and anti-arthritic action. Some experts have suggested that the element silicon is a vital component for bone and cartilage formation. This would indicate that horsetail may be beneficial in preventing osteoporosis. Anecdotal reports suggest that horsetail may be of some use in the treatment of brittle nails. Larrea mexicana (Chaparral) Impaired liver metabolism; inhibits free radical damage to lungs and liver; joint pain and rheumatism; allergies; autoimmune diseases; premenstrual syndrome; dry skin; brittle hair and nails; immune stimulant; decreases platelet aggregation; colds; cancer; allergies, skin diseases; regrowth of muscle tissue 16. Plantago major (Plantain) Diuretic action helps with detoxification. Petroselinum crispum (Parsley) A strong diuretic, carminative and digestive tonic, antispasmodic, stimulant of uterine muscle & nutritive. For urinary infections and calculi; oedematous conditions; depressed gastric and digestive performance; visceral and vascular spasms; for post-natal womb involution and the promotion of lactation; for arthritic conditions linked to defective kidney eliminations; for anaemic and debilitated conditions. Arcticum lappa (Burdock) Burdock root contains high amounts of inulin and mucilage. This may explain its soothing effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Bitter constituents in the root may also explain the traditional use of burdock to improve digestion. It also contains polyacetylenes that have been shown to have antimicrobial activity. Althea officinalis (Marshmallow) The active constituents in marshmallow are large carbohydrate (sugar) molecules which make up mucilage. This smooth, slippery substance can soothe and protect irritated mucous membranes. Although marshmallow has primarily been used for the respiratory and digestive tracts, its high mucilage content may also provide some relief for the urinary tract and skin. Ulmus fulva (Slippery elm) Demulcent, emollient, expectorant, diuretic, nutritive. The bark of this American Elm, though not in this country as in the United States an official drug, is considered one of the most valuable remedies in herbal practice, the abundant mucilage it contains having wonderfully strengthening and healing qualities. The bark contains a host of other constituents, but the carbohydrates that comprise the mucilage are the most important. The mucilage of slippery elm gives it the soothing effect for which it is known. It not only has a most soothing and healing action on all the parts it comes in contact with, but in addition possesses as much nutrition as is contained in oatmeal, and when made into gruel forms a wholesome and sustaining food for infants and invalids.
