Mode of Action
Echinacea ang/ purp (Purple Coneflower) Echinacea's immune stimulant actions reduce inflammation and help the body fight bacteria and viruses. Tests show that Echinacea stimulates immune system cells into action. When these cells are activated, white blood cells are more ready to wrap themselves around illness-causing invaders and to move viruses or bacteria out of your system, prevent them from reproducing themselves, or simply stop their activity. Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) The main active constituents, which includes the terpenoid anethole, are found in the volatile oil. Anethole and other terpenoids may have estrogen-like activity and inhibit spasms in smooth muscles, such as those in the intestinal tract. Recent studies have found fennel to possess diuretic, choleretic (increase in production of bile), pain-reducing, fever-reducing, and antimicrobial actions. Cetraria islandicus (Icelandic moss) soothing and healing on the gastric wall, nourishing and locally demulcant and healing. Helps fight TB. Mentha piperita (Peppermint) Slightly anaesthetises mucous membranes and the gastro-intestinal tract. Useful for chills. Colic, diarrhoea, headache heart trouble, indigestion, nausea, poor appetite, rheumatism and spasms. Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Astringent and styptic effect on the urinary mucosa; a strong diuretic; restorative to damaged pulmonary tissue; supportive of the inflammatory response; a possible detoxifier. Plantago major (Plantain) Relaxing expectorant, demulcant and astringent. Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle) The leaf has been shown to be anti-inflammatory by preventing the body from making inflammatory chemicals known as prostaglandins. Glycorrhiza glabra (Liquirice) The two most important constituents of licorice are glycyrrhizin and the flavonoids. Glycyrrhizin is anti-inflammatory and inhibits the breakdown of the cortisol produced by the body. It also has antiviral properties. Licorice flavonoids, as well as the closely related chalcones, help digestive tract cells heal. They are also potent antioxidants and work to protect the cells of the liver.
