Mode of Action
Hydrastis canadensis (Golden seal) Astringent and healing to the gut wall and other mucous membranes eg. Gastritis, enteritis, gastric ulceration; and excessive gastric sensitivities to food; locally as a mouthwash for gum and mouth disease, as an external application to broken skin and eruptions, as a douche for vaginal problems & as eardrops for middle ear infection and congestion. Agathosma betulina (Buchu) Diuretic. Reduces inflammation of mucous membranes.Hamamelis virginiana (Witch hazel) Astringent, helps in the treatment of hemorrhoids, varicose veins, rectal prolapse, debilitated venous circulation, bruises and inflammatory conditions. Plantago major (Plantain) Anti-biotic. Refrigerant, diuretic, deobstruent and somewhat astringent.Comm. mol-mol (Myrrh) Anti-fungal, anti-septic. The resin has been shown to kill various microbes and to stimulate macrophages (a type of white blood cell). Myrrh also has astringent properties and has a soothing effect on inflamed tissues in the mouth and throat. Juniperus communis (Juniper) The volatile oils, particularly 4-terpineol, cause an increase in urine volume. Some evidence suggests it may lower uric acid levels, although further study is required to confirm this action. Echinacea (Coneflower) Anti-inflammatory, immune boosting.Baptisia tinctoria (Wild indigo) Anti-inflammatory The polysaccharides and proteins in wild indigo are believed to stimulate the immune system, according to test-tube experiments which might account for its role against the common cold and flu. The root also contains alkaloids, which may contribute to its medicinal effects. Olea europea (Olive leaf) helps relieve viral infections (e.g. colds and flu), bacterial infections, fungal infections (e.g. candida albicans), parasitic infections, hypertension, angina, heart arrhythmia, and protection against free radical damage.
