Mode of Action
Ginkgo biloba may have antioxidant properties in the brain, retina of the eye, and the cardiovascular system. Its antioxidant activity in the brain and central nervous system may help prevent age-related declines in brain function. GBE's antioxidant activity in the brain is of particular interest. The brain and central nervous system are particularly susceptible to free radical attack. Free radical damage in the brain is widely accepted as being a contributing factor in many disorders associated with aging, including Alzheimer's disease. Scuttelaria laterifolia (Skullcap) One of its constituents, scutellarian, has been shown to have mild sedative and antispasmodic actions. Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) Chamomile has been used for centuries as a medicinal plant, mostly for gastrointestinal complaints. The flowers of chamomile provide 1-2% volatile oils containing alpha-bisabolol, alpha-bisabolol oxides A & B, and matricin (usually converted to chamazulene). Other active constituents include the bioflavonoids apigenin, luteolin, and quercetin. These active ingredients contribute to chamomile's anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and smooth-muscle relaxing effects, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Hydrocotyle asiatica (Gotu kola) Gotu Kola sedates the Central Nervous System (CNS) (due to Brahminoside and Brahmoside scientific research), reputedly improves alertness alleviates anxiety, increases attention span. Gotu Kola improves concentration ability. Avena sativa (Green oats) The fruits (seeds) contain alkaloids, such as gramine and avenine, as well as saponins, such as avenacosides A and B. The seeds are also rich in iron, manganese, and zinc. The straw is high in silica. Oat alkaloids are believed to account for oats' relaxing effect. Urtica dioica (Stinging nettle) Nutrative. Stimulates circulation. The leaf has been shown to be anti-inflammatory by preventing the body from making inflammatory chemicals known as prostaglandins.
