Indications
Used by modern herbalists, traditional healers and Sangoma's alike to bring soothing relief from the unpleasant symptoms of Coughs, Bronchial infections, Colds and Flu's. Helps loosen phlegm and thin bronchial secretions to rid the bronchial passageway of bothersome mucus. It also helps ease sore throat due to excessive coughing.
Mode of Action
Glycorrhiza glabra aqueous: Liquorice extract Medicinal Action: The demulcent action of Liquorice helps to soothe sore throats, is moderately pectoral and emollient. Pimpinella anisum: Aniseed Medicinal Action: Carminative, expectorant and pectoral. Indicated for hard, dry coughs where expectoration is difficult, The volatile oil has a beneficial action on the bronchial tubes in bronchitis and spasmodic asthma. Helpful for infantile catarrh. Inula helenium: Elecampane Medicinal Action: Tonic, diaphoretic, expectorant, alterative, antiseptic, astringent. In herbal medicine it is chiefly used for coughs, bronchitis and other pulmonary complaints. It gives relief to the respiratory difficulties found with asthma and bronchitis Assists with expectoration. Mostly combined with other herbs. Marrubium vulgare: White Horehound Medicinal Action: Preparations of Horehound are largely used as expectorants and tonics in lung troubles and coughs. Prunus serotina: Wild cherry Medicinal Action: Astringent tonic, pectoral, sedative. Used in the treatment of bronchitis of various types. Loosens catarrh, consumption nervous cough, and whooping cough. Pulmonaria officinale: Lungwort Medicinal Action: Demulcent, slight astringent and mucilaginous. The leaves are traditionally used as infusion herbal to ease coughs and lung catarrhs. Symphytum officinale: Comfrey Medicinal Action: Demulcent, mildly astringent and expectorant. It is highly esteemed by many traditional healers for relief in lung troubles, all pulmonary complaints, consumption and bleeding of the lungs and whooping cough. Thymus vulgaris: Thyme Medicinal Action: Antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic and carminative. The famous Culpepper on Thyme: ' a noble strengthener of the lungs, as notable a one as grows, nor is there a better remedy growing for hooping cough. It purgeth the body of phlegm and is an excellent remedy for shortness of breath.' Lobelia inflata: Asthma Weed, Pukeweed. Medicinal Action: Expectorant, diaphoretic, anti-asthmatic. Some authorities attach great value to it as an expectorant in bronchitis.
Dosage
Take one teaspoon full three times daily, or as needed. Dilute in a little warm water for small children.
