Mode of Action
Carduus marianus (Milk thistle) Contains some of the most potent liver protecting substances known. Also stimulates the production of new liver cells and prevents formation of damaging leukotrienes. Protects the kidneys. Berberis vulgaris (Barberry) The alkaloid berberine receives the most research and widest acclaim as the active component of barberry and its relatives. Berberine is also a key constituent of goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). Berberine and its cousins (such as oxyacanthine) are antibacterial and also kill ameba in test tubes. Berberine inhibits bacteria from attaching to human cells, which helps prevent an infection from occurring. This compound treats diarrhea caused by bacteria, such as E. coli. Berberine also stimulates some immune system cells to function better. Berbamine is another alkaloid found in barberry. It helps reduce inflammation and is an antioxidant. Chelidonium majalis (Greater celandine) assists the liver to recover from toxin build up. Cholagogue and bitter, antispasmodic, diuretic, laxative. Used for gallstones and gall-bladder and biliary diseases; as a constituent of prescriptions designed to clear the liver and bowel. Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion) The principal constituents responsible for dandelion's effect on the digestive system and liver are the bitter principles. Previously referred to as taraxacin, these constituents are sesquiterpene lactones of the eudesmanolide and germacranolide type and are unique to dandelion. Dandelion is also a rich source of vitamins and minerals. The leaves have a very high content of vitamin A as well as moderate amounts of vitamin D, vitamin C, various B vitamins, iron, silicon, magnesium, zinc, and manganese. The leaves are a rich source of potassium, which is interesting since the leaves are used for their diuretic action. This may make dandelion the only naturally occurring potassium-sparing diuretic, although its diuretic action is likely different from pharmaceuticals. Curcuma longa (Turmeric) Protects the liver against many toxins, inhibits platelet aggregation, and lowers cholesterol. Has antibiotic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
