Mode of Action
Humulus lupulus (Hops) Hops tea was also recommended as a mild sedative and remedy for insomnia, particularly for those with insomnia resulting from an upset stomach. It was also common for a pillow to be filled with hops to encourage sleep. Avena sativa (Green oats) The fruits (seeds) contain alkaloids, such as gramine and avenine, as well as saponins, such as avenacosides A and B.2 The seeds are also rich in iron, manganese, and zinc. The straw is high in silica. Oat alkaloids are believed to account for oats' relaxing effect. Melissa officinalis (Lemon balm) The terpenes, part of the pleasant smelling essential oil from lemon balm, produce this herb's relaxing and gas-relieving effects. Valeriana officinalis (Valerian) Valerian root contains many different constituents including essential oils that appear to contribute to the sedating properties of the herb. Central nervous system sedation is regulated by receptors in the brain known as GABA-A receptors. Valerian may weakly bind to these receptors to exert a sedating effect. Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) The flowers of chamomile provide 1-2% volatile oils containing alpha-bisabolol, alpha-bisabolol oxides A & B, and matricin (usually converted to chamazulene). Other active constituents include the bioflavonoids apigenin, luteolin, and quercetin. These active ingredients contribute to chamomile's anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and smooth-muscle relaxing effects, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract.
